How to Keep Cool Ecologically

How to Keep Cool Ecologically

We all want to stay cool and comfortable through the summer – here’s how it doesn’t have to cost the earth. Follow these simple tips to beat the heat while saving money and energy.

• Keep your air conditioner as efficient as possible
Trim any trees or shrubs that are blocking your condenser, and clean out any plant debris. Inside the house, make sure that indoor vents aren’t blocked by furniture or household items. Even in the summer, replace your HVAC filter every 3 months.

• Put cool air only where you need it
If a room isn’t being used or is naturally cool, such as a spare room or a basement, close the vents and the doors in these areas. This will result in less air being used to cool your home. If the temperature drops at night, turn off the air conditioner and open the windows.

• Control the light
Close the curtains or blinds to keep out the sun at its peak intensity. Replace old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs with cooler LED bulbs. Take advantage of the longer evenings to switch on lights later.

• Enjoy the summer!
You’ve looked forward to it, so make the most of it. Dress for the heat and turn the AC up a couple of notches. Prepare barbecued or no-cook meals and serve on the porch, balcony or patio. Get outside and enjoy this special time of the year.
